Questions worth asking
- Does a longer loan really cost more?
- Yes, and usually by more than people expect. Stretching a loan from 60 months to 84 lowers the monthly payment but can add thousands of dollars in interest. The calculator shows the total interest so you can see the trade before you sign.
- How much should I put down?
- Enough that you are not upside down — owing more than the car is worth — for long. A used car loses value slowly compared to new, but a small deposit on a long term is how people end up stuck. Around ten to twenty percent is a sensible target.
- Is the payment shown here what I will actually pay?
- No. It is an estimate based on the numbers you enter. Your real rate depends on credit approval, and the figures here exclude tax, tag, title, registration, and dealer fee.
- What APR should I use?
- If you do not know, start with the default and adjust once you have a real quote. Rates on used vehicles vary widely with credit history, loan term, and the age of the car.
